Aggressive intimacy, digressive emotionality.

The works proposed by Yusuf Sevincli and Gözde Türkkan and selected by Ali
Taptik, are a pure concentrate of emotional instability: just stop in front of them to sink into an excessive and mutable emotional experience, as a result of an unstable identity. We finally cross the photography borders ans get, through the extreme approach of the artists, almost to hit psychoanalysis.
The works of Gözde Türkkan are visibly marked by a sort of reverse voyeurism, a scopophilia of the self. The artist shows through her pictures the morbid delight at being observed, at the extroversion of the intimacy . This is not necessarily an act of honesty or made in order to open her privacy to the world, but rather a conscious display of her desire, of her own libido. Narcissism this time ceases to have the self as a center of interest to move to the other. The result is a distorted perception of this self that manages to be subdued only in part by the mediation of photography, that ends up becoming a sort of psychoanalysis. The intimacy quit the private
sphere to becomes a means of aggression, fighting, a martial art capable of hitting straight to the bowels.
If the instability of Gözde is purely emotional, Yusuf Sevincli's one is even
physical. Yusuf does not linger. He walks, he explores, he observes, he shoots and he leaves again. He collects almost obsessively scraps of reality which are always different, but they can finally find an analogy and eventually become a series of images. It 's a picaresque concept of photography, almost homeless, which rejects the stability and serenity of a home, albeit virtual, embracing instead the road and the people, animals (from dogs to insects), objects that live in it and make it alive. Subjects become patches that eventually assemble together to reveal a texture,
which is the representation of reality through the artist's eye. Emotionality digress the beaten tracks and take the street, returning us its true essence.

In a world full of codes, there is a real sense of need to somehow connect to something, anything, in this somewhat cold, mechanical, digitalized place that we live in. We ignore our relationship to nature, take it for granted and feel lost when cut off from it. Though nature, in merciless ways reminds us, not to push boundaries. Even with the least threat it may impose, we could all be grounded in Europe for hours, days and even weeks with just the tip of a volcano. We seem to loose touch with our inner selves and struggle to engage with others. Yet, we are desperate to find a connection between ourselves and others, to bond through similar backgrounds, memories and ideology. In my selection of young artists, we can feel the engagement of everyday life thoroughly, whether it be the effects of the financial crisis, social restraint or dependency on technological evolution. The shared vision of these artists is based on the actual impact of these issues on our lives.

This week is curated by Sinem Yoruk, the director and owner of Elipsis Gallery, she is a specialist in contemporary photography, photographic and fine art printing.

Eleventhirty, a new publishing project, is a magazine printed for distribution directly onto the walls of a city and reproduced as an online journal. This will be the first issue of eleventhirty and will be published in large format and distributed in areas accustomed to the visual language of advertising throughout Fremantle. The issue will be joined from page 1 to 64 via a map, with which interested people will be invited to explore the city of Fremantle to experience eleventhirty.

The İstanbul Modern Museum Photography Gallery is mounting an exhibition, “Time Within Us”, which will consist of works by photographers from Turkey, Russia and Greece. A collaborative effort on the part of 3 museums, “Time Within Us” is the first show of its kind opened jointly by the 3 countries.

The exhibition’s photographs were selected by the following: Engin Özendes, the Curator of Istanbul Modern Photography Exhibitions; Olga Sviblova, Director of the Moscow House of Photography; and, Vangelis Ioakimidis, the Director of the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography.

“Time Within Us”, consisting of 151 photographs by 15 artists (5 from each country), will be held at Istanbul Modern Photography Gallery, from 27 January to 16 May, 2010. It will also open at the Moscow International Photography Biennial in March 2010 and at the Thessaloniki International Photography Biennial in April 2010.

“Time Within Us” does not aspire to present a comprehensive survey of current photography in Turkey , Russia or Greece. Rather, the aim is to give viewers a closer look at work by artists who are already well established in their own countries. By showing that all of us possess a time and space of our own, within ourselves, “Time Within Us” invites viewers to discover their own “personal time and space”.

At the same time, in the context of the relationship between life and art, the viewer will realize that each of the show’s 15 artists also have “an inner space” of their own, as well as their own individual temporalities and rhythms.

The exhibition will display photographs by artists from the 3 countries, as follows:
• from Turkey, Berk Bilgin, Tolga Özgal, Burcu Göknar, Deniz Açıkalın, and Yusuf Sevinçli;
• from Russia, Petr Lovigin, Georgy Pervov, Tim Parshikov, Natasha Pavlovskaya, and Ivan Mikhailov;
• from Greece, Paris Petridis, Panos Kokkinias, Yiorgos Kordakis, Stratos Kalafatis, and Christina Dimitriadis.

‘Mahalle’, ‘Uçsuz bucaksız bir metropol haline gelen İstanbul’da, yirmibirinci yüzyılın başlarında mahalle denince aklınıza ne geliyor?’ sorusundan yola çıkan ve altı fotoğrafçıyı kendi yaşadıkları semtlerdeki mahalle kavramını, sosyal unsurlarıyla sınırlı kalmayıp mimari ve kentleşme gibi fiziksel boyutlarıyla da fotografik açıdan sorgulamaya davet eden bir proje.
İstanbul 2010 Avrupa Kültür Başkenti Ajansı Görsel Sanatlar Yönetmenliği’nin çağdaş sanatın İstanbul’un farklı bölgelerine ulaştırılması amacıyla başlattığı “Taşınabilir Sanat” projesinin altıncı sergisi ‘Mahalle’, Geniş Açı Proje Ofisi’nden Refik Akyüz ve Serdar Darendeliler’in küratörlüğünde gerçekleşen ve Silva Bingaz, Korhan Karaoysal, Sevim Sancaktar, Yusuf Sevinçli, Serkan Taycan ve Kerem Uzel’in mahalle temalı çalışmalarından meydana geldi.
